Ebbetts Pass North - High Sierra TrailbuildThe Pacific Crest Trail is a 2,650 mile trail running from Canada to Mexico, and is considered one of the most scenic and important world-class trails on the planet. The Pacific Crest Trail Association is a group that coordinates the continuing development, use, maintenance and support for this trail. As Californians we should feel privileged to be so close to this trail which is enjoyed each year by many thousands of visitors from around the globe. For our July trail-building event we have a unique opportunity to join with a US Forest Service crew and other members of the PCTA to do trail clearing and repair in the High Sierras. Please plan to join other volunteers and Dolly Chapman's Humboldt-Toiyabe Forest Service trail crew to clear and widen the tread between Ebbetts Pass (Hwy 4) and Blue Lakes Road. Elevations vary between 7,750ft. to 8,900 ft. in the imposing and geologically diverse Mokelumne Wilderness. The work is moderate to strenuous, and will involve brush removal, tread reconstruction and the use of traditional tools, including crosscut saws. A limited number of volunteers with sawyer experience, or who wish to receive training in the use of crosscut saws, may participate in a backpack hike to clear blow-downs across the trail and trees that threaten the trail. Location: Ebbetts Pass - Pacific Crest Trail Directions: All volunteers should arrive at the Ebbetts Pass trailhead by Thursday evening. If possible, arrive earlier in the day to allow additional time to acclimatize to the high altitude and to setup camp. We will be camping this first night near the trailhead parking area, which is approximately 0.3 miles NE of where the PCT crosses Highway 4 at Ebbetts Pass. To get to Ebbetts Pass, take Route 4. Driving time from the Bay Area will probably be about 4 hours. Agency: USFS - Dolly Chapman, Supervising Ranger Supervisor: Bob Ballou, PCTA, (775) 267-0314 Project Lead: Hank Magnuski (650) 714-2409 Additional Information: A spike camp will be established about four miles north of Ebbetts Pass. Volunteers will need to pack in their own shelter, sleeping bag, eating utensils (including a cup, plate and bowl), long sleeve shirt, long pants, heavy-duty boots, work gloves, sunscreen, etc. Tools, food, and the crew kitchen will be packed in by mule. Hard hats are required and will be provided to all who don't bring their own. Some previous trail work will be helpful, but not necessary. Volunteers should plan on being in camp by the evening of Thursday, July 12th. If possible, come earlier and allow 24 hours to acclimatize to the altitude of this location. Allow a minimum of two hours to hike into the spike camp. All food and tools will be supplied by the PCTA, and volunteers need only bring their workday and camping equipment. We will be working at high altitudes, so sun-screen, lip balm and sun-glasses are advised. This is a poison-oak free environment. Volunteers are welcome to extend their work time in the Sierras. We are participating in a portion of a week-long project. Please contact the project lead for additional information. |
